Quadruple Helix Workshop in Capua : Circular Bioeconomy as a Driver for Sustainable Development in Southern Italy

The circular bioeconomy, a core pillar of the European Union’s strategy for ecological transition, is increasingly recognized as a crucial framework for building a sustainable, resilient, and competitive economy. Within this context, the Campania region is emerging as a strategic hub for the development of innovative bio-based production models and new opportunities for economic and social growth.

This was the focus of the event titled “Circular Bioeconomy: A New Economic Paradigm for the Inner Areas of Campania and the South”, held in Capua and organized by Spring – the Italian Cluster of Circular Bioeconomy, in collaboration with the University of Campania Luigi Vanvitelli. The event marked the third Quadruple Helix Workshop of the Italian Partner of the Bioloc Project, following previous engagements in Oliveto Citra and an online session.

The BIOLOC project is committed to enhancing the role of bio-based and social innovation in revitalizing local communities through the promotion of more sustainable and efficient systems of production and consumption. By focusing on rural and inner areas, BIOLOC aims to demonstrate how regions often perceived as peripheral can become central actors in the green transition.

Campania was chosen as the setting for this event due to its high availability of biomass and diverse industrial and agricultural landscape, particularly in the agroforestry and dairy sectors. These sectors have been identified as key enablers for the development of circular bioeconomy models in rural areas.

The Capua event served as a platform for sharing best practices, encouraging cross-regional collaboration, and promoting scalable models for local and regional development. It brought together stakeholders from across Italy and Europe, reinforcing Campania’s role as a leader in the circular bioeconomy at both national and international levels.

By advancing these discussions and supporting territorial cooperation, BIOLOC continues to contribute to a broader EU vision of inclusive, sustainable development, empowering communities through innovation and circularity.
