SME Week: Sustainable Innovation and Circular Economy in Huesca

The “Semana de las Pymes” meaning “SME Week” in spanish, organized by BIOLOC partner Circe (the Technological Center of the Government of Aragón), which took place in Aragon from 6 to 12 May  kicked off with an inspiring event that brought together prominent figures from the business world at the Walqa Connection Hall in Huesca. This gathering became a crucial space for the exchange of ideas, experiences, and success stories focused on the circular economy, highlighting the commitment of local businesses to sustainability.

Regional companies showcased their innovative projects, all with a strong emphasis on ecological and social sustainability. Four initiatives stood out, not only for revolutionizing their sectors but also for driving rural revitalization and promoting inclusive development.

Featured Projects:

  1. Eboca and the Fertcafé Project: Eboca is leading the way in organic waste reuse with its innovative Fertcafé project, which turns coffee grounds into fertilizer. This initiative not only reduces waste but also promotes sustainable agricultural practices, fostering a complete life cycle for products that would otherwise be discarded.
  2. Cervezas Borda: Originating in Aineto, this project is dedicated to brewing beer and other natural beverages using elderberry, a local resource. Cervezas Borda not only sources ingredients locally but also pairs these products with other regional items, supporting the local economy and reducing its carbon footprint.
  3. Valentia and the Huerta Project: Focusing on organic farming and social inclusion, Valentia has launched a new project that offers employment opportunities to vulnerable individuals. This initiative not only promotes the production of healthy and sustainable food but also strengthens social cohesion, demonstrating how agriculture can be a force for positive change.
  4. Tararaina and the Eco-Riz Project: This project aims to establish a shared workshop to process organic licorice grown in the floodplains of the Ebro River in Pina de Ebro. Eco-Riz also prioritizes social inclusion by offering training in cultivation and product self-management to women in vulnerable situations in the Ribera Baja del Ebro region.

A Commitment to the Circular Economy

Each of these companies not only showcased their capacity for innovation but also their dedication to fostering biology-based value chains and revitalizing rural areas through an inclusive transition. From promoting sustainable value chains to efficiently using resources to increase circularity, these projects exemplify a new business paradigm that seeks a balance between economic success and social and environmental well-being.

Event Closing

The event was attended by Ana Sanz Campos, Director General of SMEs and the Self-Employed at the Department of Economy, Employment, and Industry, who, in her closing speech, reaffirmed the Government of Aragón’s commitment to promoting initiatives that drive the circular economy and sustainable development in the autonomous community. Sanz Campos emphasized the importance of continuing to support small and medium-sized enterprises in their transition to more sustainable business models that benefit not only the environment but also local communities.

The SME Week in Huesca started with a strong message of hope and action, demonstrating that the future of the economy can and should align with the principles of sustainability and social inclusion.
